PUBILC AWARENESS PROGRAM

SICKLE CELL TRAIT PUBILC AWARENESS

One of our most impactful initiatives is the Sickle Cell Trait Public Awareness Program, designed to reach at-risk individuals of childbearing age. Research and data from the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Newborn Screening Program reveal a significant 17% rise in newborn screenings over the past five years — highlighting the urgent need for increased education and prevention.

In partnership with the City of New Haven’s Department of Public Health, we are working to raise awareness among individuals applying for marriage licenses through the Department of Vital Statistics. This program emphasizes the importance of knowing both partners’ sickle cell trait (SCT) status before marriage and starting a family. An integral part of our effort includes a survey to assess both the knowledge levels and perceptions of those in this at-risk group. Insights from this survey will guide future educational campaigns and targeted interventions.

As part of our mission, the Crescent Dream Foundation plans to expand this program to other urban centers across Southern Connecticut. We aim to publish our findings and collaborate with the Connecticut State Newborn Screening Program to evaluate and strengthen the program’s impact. If proven effective, this innovative model can be replicated more widely, reaching communities far beyond Connecticut.

We recognize that our current study represents only a portion of the urban population we hope to serve. That’s why we are actively seeking new partners, additional resources, and broader outreach opportunities — so we can expand our reach, increase awareness, and protect future generations from the challenges of sickle cell disease.
