TUTORIAL PROGRAM
EMPOWERING STUDENTS. BREAKING ACADEMIC BARRIERS.
One of the greatest challenges faced by young people living with sickle cell disease is the impact on school attendance and academic performance. Frequent hospital visits, health crises, and fatigue often cause students to miss significant classroom time — leading to academic setbacks. Nationally, the average rate of students repeating a grade is around 4.5%, but among students with sickle cell disease, this rate can rise to nearly 40%, creating a serious educational gap.

To address this, the Crescent Dream Foundation has launched a Tutorial Program in collaboration with local colleges and universities. Through this initiative, trained college students provide one-on-one tutoring and academic support to middle and high school students affected by sickle cell disease. This program is supported by a dedicated program coordinator and enhanced by digital learning tools generously provided by partner institutions. Our goal is to ensure that every student in the sickle cell community has the resources, encouragement, and guidance needed to succeed academically — not just in catching up, but in excelling. By tracking and addressing grade repetition rates within our local school systems, we aim to close the achievement gap, restore confidence, and create pathways to brighter futures.

The Crescent Dream Foundation’s Tutorial Program is more than academic help — it’s a lifeline for students and families who have felt the discouraging weight of unmet educational needs. Together, we’re building hope, opportunity, and success, one lesson at a time.
